The Wendy's Guy needs your help

Kickstart Your Weekend With Junior

Listen up, Longhorns.

This isn't a film or tech project, so it's a little off the path of this column, but it's a Web-based cause that's directly tied to our community, and one that'll hit home for many students and alumni.

The Wendy's Guy, aka Ishmael "Junior" Mohammed, served at the Texas Union for 14 years, and set a record for fast-food sales in 30 minutes. His quick service and perky demeanor touched thousands of students during his time at the University of Texas. He was even the subject of a short documentary that premiered at South by Southwest 2006, called "Junior! The Wendy's Guy."

Junior left Austin two years ago to return to New York, The Daily Texan reported at the time. But UT alumnus Benjamin McPhaul ran into Junior near campus last night and learned that the former legend was homeless. McPhaul launched a GoFundMe campaign this morning, hoping to raise $2,000 to help Junior find a home and a job.

In five short hours, 121 people had chipped in $2,420, and with 480 shares on Facebook and counting, the numbers continue to rise.

Looks like someone is getting repaid for years of good service.

Take a look at the campaign here.
