Kickstart Your Weekend: New Year, 'New Beginnings!'

Spill.com is dead. The Austin-centered film website finally closed this fall, but if you thought that its patented brand of cinematic cynicism and genre excitement is gone, then get ready for some new beginnings.

For its tens of thousands of loyal fans, Spill wasn't just a movie news website. It's not just that its animated reviews were cutting-edge; it was a true community – fearless, shameless, rude, crude, and passionate – and people would travel long distances for the chaotic joy of the annual Spill.con. Unfortunately, earlier this month, after seven years, the corporate paymasters at Hollywood.com finally pulled the plug.

But don't despair. Chris Cox (aka the acerbic Cyrus) and Brian Salisbury have launched their own celebration of all things nerdy, geeky and obsessive, OneOfUs.Net (read more about that here). Similarly, game review podcast The Loading Bar has migrated platforms, and Jason and Jeff are now hosting Rage Select. Next, the original Spiller Korey Coleman plans to resurrect the spirit of Austin's most engaged fan community with New Beginnings!

Coleman wasn't just one of the gang at Spill: It really was his gang. He formed it out of the ashes of local public access review show The Reel Deal in 2006, before becoming its manager when Hollywood took over. He was also responsible for the distinctive animation style of the site, drawing the caricatures that helped make the Spill guys so recognizable. Now he's unleashed again, and he plans to resurrect the spirit, insanity, and feel of his original creation.

The current fundraising campaign is already a success. The original target was for $30,000, but the Spill love has blown through that roof, with over $93,000 pledged already. So now there's a new target set: If Coleman can raise $100,000, then not only will he be able to build a new website, but there'll be a mobile version and more podcasts than ever before. More importantly, it'll cover a whole year of operating costs, giving the site a real chance at establishing itself.

He's not waiting for the cash to come in. Coleman and Martin Thomas (aka the long-suffering Leon) have already gotten back behind the microphone for the free-roaming The Korey and Martin Show, and Coleman got www.koreycoleman.com up and running as a landing page for his future endeavors.
