Kickstart Your Weekend With 'Preternatural'

By Monica Riese, September 20, 2013, 4:55pm, Picture in Picture

Partially, we wanted to showcase the Indiegogo campaign for "unreliable documentary" Preternatural because it looks like a solid project put together by a talented team of Austinites.

But that's reason enough to write up dozens of crowdfunding campaigns going on in this town at any given time.

Preternatural gets the boost this week because it seemed appropriate to draw your attention to fairies – "but not the post-Victorian era pixie-dust-and-butterfly-wings sort of fairies … fairies that will eat you" – on the weekend of Fantastic Fest, that annual celebration of all things bizarre, gory, weird, and, well, fantastic. So that's another good reason.

Reasons three, four, and five? Meet the team. Writer/director/producer Tim Cunningham has put together a compelling pitch video – including interviews with visual effects supervisor/cinematographer Sean Cunningham and creature designer/art director Chris Grun – and the team has an impressive résumé of VFX credits (Land of the Lost, Snow White and the Huntsman, Cabin in the Woods), including nine Academy Award nominations for best visual effects.

There's even the convenient time hook that Tim Cunningham is doing an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit tomorrow morning.

Still not sold? What about giving money to an out-of-work VFX guy to show Hollywood it's important to put your money where your talent is? Yeah, thought so. Check out the pitch video below, visit the campaign, and spread the word; they've got four days left, and plenty of room to go to meet their goal.

Kickstart Your Weekend is a series intended to showcase Texas film and tech projects that are crowdfunding their way to a goal, be it distribution, a prototype, or production costs. If you have a project that we should know about, email us at filmflam@austinchronicle.com.
