'The Happy Poet' Hits Stateside

By Monica Riese, May 6, 2013, 11:52am, Picture in Picture

Listen up, granolaheads. Actually, you know what? Listen up, the rest of you, too. This is a story for every Austinite.

The Happy Poet is screening tonight at the Stateside as part of the Stateside Independent series, which should be enough to snag your attention.

And then if we told you that it was filmed in Austin almost five years ago with such local favorites as Chris Doubek and Liz Fisher and Jonny Mars, and this is its long-awaited homecoming and theatrical reunion, you really would have to get your butt in a seat.

And then – just in case you had some excuse worked up not to go – we'll go ahead and add that it's a story of "the little guy trying to make it big," which, c'mon, you can all identify with.

So there you go: That's a full serving of just deserts with icing on the cake and a cherry on top for this "stealthy, sweet" film, which is so saccharine it's probably given your cavities cavities, which means you're all set for an "all-organic, mostly vegetarian" food stand that is the central part of the film.

Note: The Stateside Independent series will be taking a little break after tonight's screening to gear up for the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series. But if you miss tonight's screenings, The Happy Poet will be released on DVD and streaming platforms on Tuesday, June 25. So that's something to be happy about.

The Happy Poet screens tonight at Stateside at the Paramount (719 Congress) at 7pm (doors at 6:30pm). A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. Visit www.austintheatre.org for more information.
