Texan Typists Unite

By Monica Riese, April 18, 2013, 3:01pm, Picture in Picture

Pop quiz! When you see the word "type," what comes to mind?

a) -writer
b) -cast
c) -set
d) geno-
e) 2 diabetes
f) A personality

If you answered a, b, c, or all three, have we got a film for you. If you answered d, e, or f, you are a science, health, or psychology nerd who likely enjoys reading and might also enjoy this screening from a technological standpoint, and we'd hate to discriminate. So either way, read on.

The Typewriter (in the 21st Century) is a documentary about typewriters and their ever-expanding fan club of authors, journalists, poets, bloggers, and repairmen. Filmmakers Christopher Lockett and Gary Nicholson interviewed almost three dozen of those folks for this film on the low-tech machine that has seen a resurgence in recent years.

Tomorrow, you can see the film for the first time at the University of Texas' Fine Arts Library, which houses 350,000 books, 12,000 DVDs, 48,000 CDs, and more than 135,000 LPs (analog fans have to like those odds). After a reception at 5pm, the screening will start at 6pm, and a Q&A will follow, featuring producer Gary Nicholson and typewriter museum owner John Payton. To add to the evening's excitement, the typewriters used by Walter Cronkite, Andy Rooney, and Oscar Brockett will be on display along with typewriter art and more. Best of all, it's free and open to the public.

See the film's website for more information, and watch the trailer below for a teaser of the type of evening you're in for.

The Typewriter (in the 21st Century) screens Friday, April 19, 5pm, at the UT Fine Arts Library (DFA 3.200). The event is free and open to the public.
