Mondo Ascends to the 'Game of Thrones'

By Richard Whittaker, February 25, 2013, 1:00pm, Picture in Picture

How do you get to Westeros? Try travelling via Guadalupe. Mondo Gallery will be hosting a new show featuring art inspired by the HBO sensation Game of Thrones, and are launching a series of eight new prints, just in time for SXSW.

The permanent home of Austin's print opened during SXSW 2012, and so what better way to celebrate the first anniversary with not just another show of original art, but an original art show and the release of the first two in a series of eight prints inspired by George R. R. Martin's brutal, bloody, muddy fantasy series

Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael called Game of Thrones a favorite around his offices. In fact, their history of plotting with HBO goes back to last year, when the local design crew produced three prints for San Diego Comic-Con. In a press release for the show, he wrote, "After the success of our San Diego Comic-Con initiative with HBO in 2012, we thought this was a perfect fit. We hope the fans feel our work has done justice to the show,"

Artists recruited include Fables cover artist João Ruas; master of the eerie panorama Daniel Danger; Hyper-realist Jason Edmiston; Australian gig poster master Ken Taylor; Fine art faerie artist Mia Araujo; and Mondo regulars JC Richard, Aaron Horkey, Craig Drake, Jock and Phantom City Creative amongst others (the burning question is, who will dare take on the horror of the Red Wedding?). Color me particularly impressed that Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon (whose Frankenstein was a high point of the recent Mondo/Universal Monsters show) is back, and hes joined by comics legend Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra: Assassin). Check out the first work, Mike Mitchell's portrait of everyone's favorite schemer (short of stature, big on plans) Tyrion Lannister, as brought to full life by Peter Dinklage.

And, if that doesn't get you strapping on your armor, how about the debut of a new beer inspired by the show. At the gallery show grand opening on March 8-12, Cooperstown, NY-based Brewery Ommegang will be handing out samples of Iron Throne, a Lannister-style golden blonde ale with noble hops. The beer will go on sale nationally to coincide with the March 31 debut of season three. Arguably, there should be a Tyrion-themed wine as well, but there will be more Game of Thrones beers to come.

The Mondo Game of Thrones show runs March 8-14 at the Mondo Gallery, 4115 Guadalupe, March 8-14. The gala opening will be March 8, 7-10pm. For more info, visit www.mondotees.com.
