'Tree of Life,' 'Bullhead' score Oscar nominations

The Tree of Life, filmed throughout Central Texas by longtime Austin resident Terrence Malick, was announced this morning as a multiple Oscar nominee.

Director Terrence Malick, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and the producers, who traditionally accept the award for Best Picture, were all recognized for their work. The Academy didn’t release the exact names of the producers nominated, but left it at “nominees to be determined”; the Academy limits the number of producers who can accept an award, and The Tree of Life’s imdb.com page lists 15 different people functioning in roles from producer to c-producer to associate producer to executive producer to co-executive producer and (personal fave) producer: natural history, which surely must refer to the film’s trippy dinosaur sequence.

Malick was previously nominated for Best Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay for 1999’s The Thin Red Line, and his latest film has been on Oscar shortlists for months. Slightly more left-field? Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse, has itself an Oscar nominee. Acclaimed Belgian film Bullhead, which Drafthouse Films acquired after the film screened to huzzahs at Fantastic Fest 2011, was nominated for Best Film in the Foreign Language category. The Chronicle with Drafthouse Films CEO Tim League and Bullhead director Michael R. Roskam over the weekend; you can read the interview here.
