, May 22, 2013, 3:21pm, Newsdesk

The Association of Alternative Newsmedia announced today its 2013 AAN Awards Finalists, including three nominations for The Austin Chronicle.

The Chronicle was recognized in three categories (specific to papers with a circulation over 50,000): Staff writer Jordan Smith (a frequent award-winner, including last year’s Texas Institute of Letters Stanley Walker Award) and Screens/Books Editor Monica Riese (formerly the assistant news editor) were nominated in the Breaking News category for their work on the Esme Barrera murder case; in the Public Service category, Smith, Senior News Editor Michael King, and Creative Director Jason Stout were recognized for their “The War on Women’s Health” series; and film critic and Managing Editor Kimberley Jones was nominated for Arts Criticism.

Austin resident Jen Sorensen, whose Slowpoke Comics strip is syndicated nationally and in The Austin Chronicle, was also recognized in the Cartoon category.

The finalists were chosen by judges at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University from a pool of 900 applicants. Winners will be announced at the AAN Annual Convention, held this year in July in Miami. For a full list of nominees and links to nominated works, visit the AAN website.

Congratulations to all the nominees.
