Lots of Animals, Lots of Love

By Jordan Smith, September 28, 2012, 8:59am, Newsdesk

It's a big weekend – and October will be a big month – for pet adoptions at both the Austin Humane Society and the city's Austin Animal Center, with specials galore to encourage you to find your next furry friend today.

This weekend the AHS is hosting a cat-ravaganza this weekend only, with a $20 adoption fee special for qualified adopters on all kittens and cats. All animals are spay/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. The shelter is open from noon to 7pm today and tomorrow – Friday and Saturday – and is open noon to 5 pm on Sunday.

Also this weekend is a Free for Fall adoption event at the AAC, with all adoption fees waived for ready-to-adopt cats and dogs. The animals are all spay/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and will go to their new homes with a collar, city tag, and microchip. With 950 animals now living at the shelter there are plenty of furry friends to choose from. The AAC, at 7201 Levander Loop, is open daily from 11 am to 7 pm.

Finally, October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, and to celebrate 31 days of face-licking, tail-wagging fun, the AHS is rolling out the Big Love adoption event focusing on, you guessed it, large-dog adoption.

Beginning Oct. 1, any shelter dog over 40 pounds will be adoptable for just $20. All dogs are spay/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. "Shelter dogs are loyal companions, and when you adopt from a shelter, you help end animal homelessness," says Frances Jonon, executive director of AHS, the city's oldest no-kill shelter.
