“Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke. That's their natural and first weapon. She will need her sisterhood.” – Gloria Steinem

Today, a stronger sisterhood is emerging in Austin and beyond, a grouping of feminists ready to carry the torch for those outside of the “status quo” and those that are struggling to get there. And today, Gloria Steinem speaks in Austin, Texas – and there is still time to get there and be a part of the audience.

Steinem, one of the women’s movement's fearless leaders, will further this sentiment at her September 5 talk, “Feminism: Past, Present, and Future” presented at the AT&T Conference Center. With a particular interest in sex caste systems, the seminal leader, author, and women’s rights activist remains a champion of what preceding feminist Simone de Beauvoir referred to as “the second sex.”

Steinem’s keynote speech is part of the Texas Council on Family Violence Statewide Conference, an annual event that brings together all of Texas’ family violence shelters and programs. The $20 proceeds from her hour-long address will go to help hundreds of battered-women programs. Tickets to a VIP book-signing and reception with Steinem are also still available for $50.

The TCFV functions to provide service provider support, advocate on behalf of domestic violence victims, and implement prevention programs. It has been extending a hand to victims of domestic violence for over 30 years.
