Cold Rain and Snow
Freezing drizzle then snow overnight
By Jordan Smith, 5:37AM, Fri. Feb. 4, 2011
As promised, Austin got snow overnight (.9 inches!) – but not before some freezing rain fell, meaning streets this morning are a mess. That, of course, is what has prompted the spate of school and municipal closings.
Below is a partial list of those closings.
City of Austin is closed. And the city is encouraging folks to stay home, if possible. Since the city is closed today, that means no trash or recycling pickup for your Friday collection folks. (If you want to stay posted on emergency operations, check out the city's Homeland Security and Emergency Management site.) Travis County is closed.
Capital Metro is operating on a Sunday schedule.
Austin ISD is closed, as is Eanes ISD. On that note, so are Dripping Springs, Leander, Georgetown, Lake Travis, Del Valle, and Round Rock ISDs. I think it's safe to say that your little public schooler is staying home today. Snow Day!
University of Texas at Austin is closed today, as is Austin Community College. UT will make a decision later about whether night activities will also be canceled. Also closed: Texas State University and Huston-Tillotson University.
Meals on Wheels is also closed today, meaning if you're a volunteer, your services are not needed. (This is not a decision the organization takes lightly, President and CEO Dan Pruett said in a press release, but the organization began last week to provide "shelf stable" meals to all clients in anticipation of today's inclement weather.)
Dept. of Public Safety offices in Travis and Williamson Counties will open at 10am – in case you just have to have that new ID today.
Planes are coming and going from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, but not all flights are flying. So be sure to check on your flight status before you head out to the airport.
