The Daily Hustle: 9/29/10

I miss anything?

Yup, the Hustle’s back from a brief vaycay, just in time to share highlights on tomorrow’s City Council agenda.

As you may know, the meeting’s going down at the Carver Center in East Austin, 10am. Below, selected items from council’s September 30 agenda:

Item 3: $1.5 million to acquire a lot between Fourth and Fifth street, abutting I-35, which will serve as the primary construction entrance and a temporary construction site for the Waller Creek tunnel project.

Items 4, 9: Requiring a $1 annual payment from Planned Parenthood to the city for their lease on their E. Seventh building. A 10-year lease, with a 10-year renewal option, is up for a vote; Item 9 inks a $50,000 contract amendment and 6-month extension with Planned Parenthood for teen pregnancy prevention.

Items 5-8: Eminent domain cases being brought forward for Austin Water construction.

Item 10: A revamp of the process by which contracts are awarded to social service providers – shelters, mental health providers, drug and alcohol treatment centers, etc. – which largely haven't been rebid since the 1990s. Should the item pass, a request for proposals would be issued in October 2010.

Item 12: A $220,000 contract with Richards, Rodriguez & Skeith, LLP, for legal representation in the breach-of-contract lawsuit brought by Nathaniel Sanders' family attorney, Adam Loewy.

Item 18: Renaming Zilker Neighborhood Park. Slated to be renamed Bluebonnet Park last week, neighbors protested, saying they know it as Little Zilker. Council should make the renaming decision today.

Item 22: Directing the City Manager “to work with other area governmental bodies and coordinate a job fair … with the goal of filling as many vacant positions as soon as possible.”

Item 23: A resolution asking the City Manager to “investigate incentives for the recycling of demolition and construction materials.” (Item 23)

Item 27: A resolution honoring Oita, Japan, Austin's sister city, whom the city is recommitting to “certain joint-partnership objectives … through music, which is a common means of expression for both communities,” and exchange programs on peace, the environment, and, uh, more.

Items 34, 35: Two 10:30am presentations: a briefing on the city's Permanent Supportive Housing Strategy, and a report on taxi issues, likely including pedicabs.

Item 37-46: Zoning cases before council, including the owner-fought case for historic zoning being made by the neighbors of the Callan-Boswell House at 408 E. 33rd Street. (Item 46) The three zoning cases relating to The Domain (Items 42-44) have apparently been postponed by staff until October 14.
