Daily Music: Geezerville
15 Minutes with Elvis Costello
I love Elvis. Have since the first time I heard “Watching the Detectives” in 1977. Once an angry young man and now a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, his new memoir Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink made me fall in love with him all over again. Here’s an excerpt from a long conversation we had last week. He’s at BookPeople on Tuesday to further discuss.

James Taylor Pleases All at ACL Taping
Thursday night’s Austin City Limits taping with James Taylor was as surprise-filled as any I’ve ever witnessed. He concentrated on tunes from his first collection of new material in 13 years, Before This World, but those songs fit snugly next to his better-known hits. They’re as varied in tempo and style as any in his repertoire.

Patty Griffin – The Paramount’s Aural Blade
Opened on Congress Avenue 100 years ago, the Paramount Theatre now counts among the oldest continuously running operations of its kind in the country. Festivities marked the centennial this year, but none with the visuals of Wednesday night’s Relighting of the Blade. The blade is the vertical sign above the marquee that lights up with the theatre’s name.

10 Minutes with Stephen Stills
Texas-born Stephen Stills talked about his unfinished autobiography, teaming up with guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg in the Rides, and his love of the blues, all while throwing the occasional barb in the direction of his bandmates of almost 50 years, David Crosby and Graham Nash. Stills performs tonight at the Paramount Theater.

Austin City Limits Hall of Fame Flashback
A benefit for KLRU TV, Thursday’s induction ceremony at the Moody Theater for the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame found the 41-year-old institution digging back to its roots. In recent years, the longest-running music show on television has courted the biggest rock acts of the day, including Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, and Radiohead.

Levitation Q&A: Wayne Coyne
Sunday night, the Flaming Lips headline Levitation. On the phone, frontman Wayne Coyne can talk about anything even if he’s making it up as he goes along. We touched base on Roky Erickson, whose 13th Floor Elevators celebrate a 50th anniversary prior to the Lips’ set, plus their circus-like stage show, and continuing collaboration with Miley Cyrus.

Bob Dylan Throws Shadows
If you’ve seen Bob Dylan live in the past 20 years, you know what to expect: voice rough as unwashed denim, some of his best-known songs re-arranged almost beyond recognition, a couple of new tunes, and zero interaction with the audience. So it was Wednesday at the Bass Concert Hall, only with the benefit of a proper concert hall instead of an arena or outdoors.
