SXSW Music No. 5

South by Southwest arrives in exactly six weeks. Music fans from Austin to Australia remain eager for some mention of headliners, but so far the local conference has proved stingy in that department. The most prominent act on today’s rack of 174 festival additions is folk charmer Hurray for the Riff Raff.

The remainder of the list brims with emerging artists, international curiosities, and homegrown breakouts. Cameroonian singer Naomi Achu has signed on for the Music portion of the festival running March 10-19 in downtown Austin. The African-born, Washington D.C.-stationed pop star rapper becomes part of a world music grouping that includes Kingston’s roots reggae specialists Pentateuch Movement and Peruvian singer Gala Brie, who writes moving Spanish language pop.

Stateside additions include “New Phone (Who Dis)” rapper Cakes da Killa, pop outlier Har Mar Superstar, young Chicago producer Owen Bones, English/Portuguese dream-pop specialists Winter, super catchy punk trio Potty Mouth, death-tech metallers Wrvth, and Dallas’ funky Southern rap tribe the Outfit.

Thus far, SXSW has posted up a strong year representing the local scene and that trend continues with this week’s announcement of 30 acts hailing from the 512. Journeyman guitarist Ian Moore has been added alongside rapper Kydd Jones, Delta Spirit frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez, synth explorers Casual Strangers, country ace Paul Cauthen, math-folk act Hikes, and River Jones & Lorelei Linklater, the latter famous for acting in her father’s film Boyhood. Also on the local docket:
