How’s that calendar looking for next month? Busy, no doubt. Get ready to fill in all your nights March 11-16, because the South by Southwest Music schedule is going live as we speak.
No word yet on über-huge Doritos stage types, but the foundation for the five-night music festival is shaping up quite nicely, with showcases plotting alongside a smattering of legitimate headliners. Already we’re seeing good sets at new destinations, like Rowdy’s Saloon at Sixth & Neches and new Rainey Street haunt Half Step, which should buttress the hullabaloo hurtling down that ever-congesting street. Appointment showcases are also popping up in strange places: Sarah Jaffe Tuesday at Esther’s Follies.
Unlike the slew of other music events that happen in this town, SXSW’s grown far too large for a traditional breakdown, so options vary per individual. Upon first glance, yours truly’s excited about the prospect of Nashville products Natural Child playing two nights at Hotel Vegas (Tuesday, 1:15am; Saturday, 10:30pm) as well as Cody Chesnutt’s Holy Mountain showcase on Thursday.
The 512 Rooftop on Sixth boasts a strong Texas soul bill Tuesday, with the Peterson Brothers, Bobby Patterson, Kool & Together, and Akina Adderley & the Vintage Playboys leaving the floor sweaty before Jarell Perry and Bridget Kelly.
Also of note: Thursday’s Bungalow showcase starring Los Lonely Boys and East Cameron Folkcore. Los Lonely Boys, you might remember, are the band whose injury-related withdrawal in 2013 eventually helped ECF land a summer tour through Europe. And the whole city should take note of Diarrhea Planet’s Thursday headlining at Lamberts. No way those walls can handle all of that band’s guitars.
Start plotting everybody. SXSW Music begins four weeks from Tuesday.
