Sunshine Daydreams in the Dark

By Jim Caligiuri, August 1, 2013, 1:57pm, Earache!

There can never be enough music in this town. This month, it invades movie theatres: Tonight’s the third annual Meet Up at the Movies for Deadheads.

A number of celluloid palaces around the country – including Arbor Cinema at Great Hills, the Metropolitan 14 in South Austin, and the Cinemark Southpark just south of Slaughter Lane – are screening Sunshine Daydream, the oft-bootlegged Grateful Dead concert film that’s never been officially released.

Besides footage capturing Jerry Garcia & Company at a 1972 Springfield Creamery benefit in Veneta, Ore., there’s also plenty of Merry Pranksters on hand since the venue belonged to Ken Kesey’s family. Restored in hi-def, with previously unseen footage and new interviews with concert attendees, this flick’s a great way to celebrate what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 71st birthday today. Saturday, there’s Jerry Fest at Threadgill’s World Headquarters, with Deadeye and Papa Mali.

If festivals are more your thing, you can catch Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013 in the same three theaters Aug. 13. A distillation of the two-night concert in April at Madison Square Garden, it finds Slowhand jamming with Keith Richards, Buddy Guy, Robbie Robertson, Vince Gill, the Allman Brothers Band, and local guitar phenom Gary Clark Jr., among others.
