Esme Barrera’s Jan. 2012 memorial, held in the wake of her murder that New Years Eve, stirred a myriad of memories and one touching tribute: a 40-woman rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “She’s a Rainbow” that captured the beloved music fanatic’s essence.

Banded together as the Esme Barrera Fan Club, the many performers hightailed it to Tequila Mockingbird studios to record a studio version of the song. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, that recording will now see the light of day.

Six days remain in the Indiegogo campaign, but non-profit music camp Girls Rock Austin and the Esme Barrera Fan Club have raised more than $8,700 from 122 funders, nearly $3,000 more than they’d originally set out to obtain.

That money will go towards vinyl pressings of the red vinyl single – with a new track, “For Esme,” written and recorded by Girls Rock Camp Austin alumnus Cristina Allerano serving as a B-side – as well as the establishment of the Esme Barrera Unlimited Possibilities Scholarship Fund. The EBUP will help send 10 girls to a week at Girls Rock Camp Austin, which, as we’ve noted before, serves as one of the finest foundations for furthering female music educations.

Now that the fundraiser has surpassed the original goal, organizers are pushing for more. They’d like to pick up a full $12,000 before the campaign ends, a figure that would help send 25 girls to the camp on full scholarships.

No doubt, Esme would say that this is all quite awesome.
