2nd Annual Blue Hole Concerts for the Park

By Raoul Hernandez, June 7, 2013, 2:47pm, Earache!

Chaos in Tejas came, left its boot print on our face, and went. End of music festivals until ACL, right? Almost. While I always space the spring/summer concerts at Barton Springs, this year’s annual avalanche of music fests nearly caused me to miss the announcement of Wimberley’s 2nd Annual Blue Hole Concerts for the Park, beginning today at 5pm.

Polar temperatures at Barton Springs send me into cardiac arrest, but the magic swimming hole at Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley feels warmer to me.

Maybe it’s the constant stream of kids on the tire swing, or the squadron of dragonflies setting down on any available plot of flesh protruding above water. Sun filtered through a canopy of trees, lush, green banks, the golf-course-like sprawl of a drying lawn...

Like Alejandro Escovedo sings, “Paradise.”

Sponsored by and benefiting its cite courtesy of park foundation non-profit the Friends of Blue Hole, this weekend’s three-day menu combines the best of two Texan worlds: live music and summer coolant. Swimming ceases at 4pm for plugged-in entertainment, and opens tomorrow at 10am and 11am on Sunday. Kids under 4 get in free, there’s on-site parking and shuttles, and a usual list of no-no’s:

• Pets
• Outside food or drink
• Alcohol
• Coolers
• Smoking
• Umbrellas blocking others
• Glass bottles
• “Contraband”
• Professional A/V equipment
• Laser pointers

Tickets and schedule at Blue Hole Concerts for the Park, with this evening’s triple-headliner bill of San Marcos hit folkie Susan Gibson, Western vet Hal Ketchum, and Austin songbird Sahara Smith stacking up strong. Roots mama Ruthie Foster towers over tomorrow with country buck Rick Trevino, last seen onstage with Los Lobos at Pachanga.

See you in the drink!
