Better Than the Rest

If you’ve enjoyed the Austin nightlife these last couple years, you’ve no doubt seen or run into Bianca “Fiesta” Flores. Much of the time, she’s running the show. Marketing coordinator at Transmission Entertainment, Flores currently busies herself prepping Fun Fun Fun Fest, Nov. 2-4, on Auditorium Shores.

“Those three days will be absolutely amazing,” gushes Flores. “I feel very lucky to be working with such an awesome brand and a team of people who are dedicated to moving forward and creating very unique experiences at all times.”

In fact, it was Fun Fun Fun Fest 2009 that inspired Flores to work in the music industry. After falling in love with the local music festival, she started going to more shows and getting involved in the scene.

“Later I realized that if people could do something they love that amazing, then I could too,” reasons Flores. “I didn't see any reason I couldn't do it. Transmission was always where I wanted to be.”

So in 2010, Flores began an internship at local (and Chicago and St. Louis) events and marking concern Knuckle Rumbler (“shout out to Berk and Jill”). Her talents were quickly recognized and she moved up to project coordinator. After meeting Transmission marketing guru Matt Mandrella, Flores began a marketing internship at Transmission in 2011 and continued on at the company, moving up in rank.

Flores currently owns the local scene, so it’s hard to imagine her elsewhere. When I inquired about her long-term goals, she said she eventually sees herself spending a few years in New York.

“Some goals would be to start a business, work at a label, work in advertising, tour manage, or even work on Jay Z & Kanye’s team.”

She’s an avid Kanye and Jay-Z fan, noting that her dream concert would be, “The Dig, Girls (RIP), and of course Jay Z & Kanye would headline, with special guest Beyonce.” She’s got some other music recommendations for those who want to try and be as hip as her.

“I always have the Dig on repeat. They’re my all-time favorite. Other than that, I've been listening to a lot of Azealia Banks, Mac Demarco, G.O.O.D. Music, A$AP Rocky, Wild Nothings, Grizzly Bear, and Crocodiles.

“I recently saw Mac Demarco on the inside stage at Mohawk and it was so great. I’m hooked.”

Having managed interns and street teams, Flores is no stranger to both being in and fostering the next generation of music business talent. To those getting started, she advises, “Do your research and figure out exactly what you want to do. Once you figure that out, intern for the right company – the one that will teach you what you’re interested in. That will lead you down the right path to accomplish your dreams.”

“You have to get out of your comfort zone. Go out, talk to people, and actually care about what they have to say,” continues Flores. “If you have big dreams, go for it. Nothing's impossible. I've met people that want to jump in the music industry but give up when they make a mistake or things don’t end up going their way.

“Everyone makes a few mistakes. All you can do is learn from them and be better than the rest.”
