Some House Warming Cheer
Cheer Up Charlie's announces their grand opening

If you’re like me, you’ve spent the past month lamenting where you and your friends could grab a weekend drink, or several. Without Cheer Up Charlie’s, options have felt limited. The bar scene just a bit lackluster without the paint splattered, cat-covered, rainbow walls. I’m here to tell you, the dark days will soon be over.
A grand (re)opening of epic proportion is about to take 900 Red River to a whole new high. The festivities kick off next Friday night, February 21. Whiite Walls, Austin’s “disco sensualists” band, will be releasing their EP and headlining the night. Poopoo Platter’s Drag Queen Mortal Kombat will get things messy with a deadly battle, and darkly tropical Silk Rodeo opens.
The night will also pay tribute to the long-shuttered, Chances, Austin’s former lesbian bar of days gone by. Gretchen’s Disco Plague, who last performed at 900 Red River when it was the dyke bar, will retake the stage for CUC‘s house warming. A queer blessing of sorts.
With all that going on outside let's not forget a DJ foursome, featuring Mouthfeel and Deep Cuts, will be taking over the dance floor. Like AC/DC promised, the walls will be shaking, the earth quaking.
And that’s just night one. Come back Saturday for bands XBRMNT, Mom Jeans, Sampler & Son, Big Bill, and Riders Against The Storm for Nakia's Birthday Party. At midnight the bands stop playing, and the party moves inside for the multi-talented Nakia’s DJ set and a few spins from the Gay Place's own DJs Fine & Dandy with Kate & Andy while friendly bear and The Voice veteran Nakia makes with the mingle.
Red River's “bearded dudes with guitars have been warned,” and Austin queers, freaks, hipsters, and quipsters can breath a sigh of relief. Let's bring everyone together! Charlie is back and ready to party. While the Facebook event says “come take a trip with us” we all know we’ll actually be coming home.
