The AggreGAYtor: September 24
Your daily dose of LGBTQIA news
By Brandon Watson, 4:00PM, Mon. Sep. 24, 2012
Rick Perry gets litigious, Bret Easton Ellis stirs the pot, and Dan Chois skips the celebration. Today's AggreGAYtor has a hangover.
• Broward County, Florida finally gets a headline for something other than hating on hip-hop.
• Not everyone was pleased that Ghost Hunters' Adam Berry discussed being gay on the show, Apparently there are a few misguided souls who don't want to spray him with ectoplasm. Their loss.
• Portland club changes name in reaction to transphobia controversy. Oddly, that hasn't tricked anyone. Maybe the owner ought to try for a new paint color.
• Poor pol Philip Pocock is pissed about poofs. Pity.
• Meanwhile in the UK, a senior practitioner tells students not to act too gay if they want to pass their examinations. No, no, no, it's not homophobia, he further explains, it's just that faggy limp wrists can turn an everyday autopsy into Saw 2.
• Undoubtedly some folks will criticize former Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy for his reticence to come out, but I say better late than never. Welcome to the team Kevin.
• Intel promises it will not fund any Boy Scouts troop with anti-gay policies.
• Matt Staver of the unctuous "Liberty" Council worries about a gay takeover if Obama is reelected. I guess it was only a matter of time that someone exposed Project Lavender. We'll just have to roofie him.
• Gay folks like those new fangled jazz cigarettes.
• Dan Savage does not like Mitt Romney one bit, no sirree.
• Rutgers is taking inclusivity seriously in the wake of Tyler Clementi's suicide.
• Charlotte struggles with rapid rise in LGBTQIA youth homelessness.
• Social media slime mold Bret Easton Ellis agrees with Paris Hilton's recent homophobic screed; is still irrelevant.
• New Hampshire school district is lauded for accepting transgender youth.
• New York police are seeking suspect in brutal trans bashing.
• Gay Inc.'s hullabaloo to celebrate anniversary of DADT repeal was conspicuously missing Dan Chois.
• University of Pennsylvania creates new academic discipline: queer bioethics. Coincidentally, "queer bioethics" is the AggreGAYtor's safe word when he engages in academic discipline. Weird, right?
• Ahem moving on. New polls in key battleground states show increasing support for marriage equality initiatives. Opinion is still sharply divided in Minnesota.
• Arab Spring births gay indie Lebanese band Mashrou Leila. You probably haven't heard of them.
• I'm not saying that TV's biggest stars got together to make a giant rainbow flag on the Emmys red carpet in celebration of Austin Pride, but it is awfully suspicious.
• Camp Rick Perry threatened to sue HuffPo over published gay rumors, but that was probably just because he was a cranky widdle sleepyhead.
• The attack on two Pride revelers on Friday is a reminder why we still march. Thanks to the queers and allies who came by the Chronicle/Agenda booth to say hello. Thanks to AGLCC, Kings n Things, Lez Ride, the French Inhales, Kitty & Gina, Devi at FunLovingPhotos, and Bedpost Confessions for making one badass Pride krewe (and giving my dirty truck a fierce last-minute makeover.) And thanks to everyone who came out to the festival and parade. Austin's LGBTQIA community may be unwieldy, ramshackle, and more than a little bit rowdy. But when it comes down to it, we have each other's back. (Kate X will have more on this soon.)
