Lovely Laughing Ladies
Ladies Are Funny Fest opens Thursday in the ATX
By Julie Gillis, 12:02PM, Thu. May 5, 2011
Women are funny, despite what Christopher Hitchens and John Belushi seemed to think. Aren't all people funny?
I mean, if we couldn't laugh at ourselves (and sometimes each other), we'd probably cry ourselves right to death, yeah?
Because women are funny, and because I am a woman and a funny woman, I've been working with and producing the Ladies Are Funny Festival for five years now. LAFF honors and celebrates the unique contributions of women in comedy from Austin and beyond (NY! Chicago! Toronto! LA!).
We have sketch, one woman shows, improv sets, short films, and stand up comics. Gay Place readers might recognize a few faces from the local scene, Holly Lorka is making an appearance, as is Caroline Bassett, from here in the ATX, and we've got some hot comedy from Sarah Kennedy (from the 'Burque) and Kim Diaz (818 holla!) to grace our stage.
There are lovely ladies in town all weekend. Come and check it out.
P.S.F.Y.I.: Thursday night, there is a party at Lipstick 24. There will be drink specials with a secret code you can only get it you attend our show.
[P.P.S.: There is a great feature on Julie and LAFF in today's print edition, on page 36. – ed.]
