Your Queer Schedule
Christeene and the Femme Mafia take over your weekend
By Andy Campbell, 12:03PM, Fri. Jan. 29, 2010
Now that the new issue of the Chronicle featuring Paul Soileau has hit Austin, the children are GAGGING in the streets. It's uh-maze-eeng. Want to see what everyone's talking about? You can.
Friday night Christeene will be having her EP release party at Elysium ($3-$8 sliding scale for entry). The queer musical improv outfit Disco Plague will be opening. The band features Gretchen Phillips, James Dean Jay Byrd, Joanna Labow, Amy Cook, Susan Fitz-Simon, and Thor Harris. So basically it's a queer roll call. Rebecca Havemeyer will be hosting, PJ Raval will be filming, and everyone in the GP crew will of course be drankin' and dancin'. Obvies.
Put some teabags on your eyes and spend Saturday morning recovering so that you can be up up up for the Austin Femme Mafia's Winter Wonderland Ball at the Art Authority (next to Spiderhouse). The event starts at 9pm and it's a fundraiser for the 'Mafia ($5 at the door) with a photo booth, a kissing booth and a great big bonfire outside. Dress formal Austin-stlye, which is not formal at all, and celebrate the queer femmes in your life.
My look will be as follows (from head to toe): A black and white printed and sequined city-scape jacket (has to be seen to be believed), ropey gold jewelry, bright and tight pink chords, neon sneakers. Add David Bowie makeup circa Ziggy days and we are in biznasty.
Sunday is the Lord's day and so queers aren't allowed to do anything but hide.
A note to readers: Bold and uncensored, The Austin Chronicle has been Austin’s independent news source for over 40 years, expressing the community’s political and environmental concerns and supporting its active cultural scene. Now more than ever, we need your support to continue supplying Austin with independent, free press. If real news is important to you, please consider making a donation of $5, $10 or whatever you can afford, to help keep our journalism on stands.
