Café No Sé Opens, Juliet Celebrates
By Brandon Watson, September 18, 2015, 11:00am, On the Range
Sunday football, Hollywood royalty, accidental verse, and more in today’s food news.
Improbable human being Sophia Loren is turning 81 on Sept. 20 and Juliet Ristorante is celebrating. On Sunday, executive chef Jacob Weaver will be adding an eggplant parmigiana special to the menu, reportedly one of Loren’s favorite dishes. At the bar, the Sophia Collins – gin, lemon, soda, and a red wine float – will help you deal with the realization that you will never have a home in Geneva.
For a more expensive celebration, find Loren’s mother’s original eggplant parmigiana recipe in her 1971 cookbook In Cucina con Amore (later retitled Eat With Me in translation). There, the legendary screen star poses with gigantic cheeses, a perplexing sausage, giant wooden forks and spoons, and what appears to be a pair of panties made of prosciutto.
Although we always figured
Evel Knievel was more of a pilsner,
South Austin Brewery posits him as blonde ale “light in body and hop bitterness but heavy on personality.” Engage in good-natured arguments about the legacy of America’s most famous daredevil at a
release party tonight (5:30pm-12mid) for Evel Ale with music, samples, and food by
Evil Weiner.
Far be it from us to engage in hyperbole, but the new 27-acre
Treaty Oak Distilling Company ranch is kind of like Camelot, Xanadu, El Dorado, and Shangri-La in one. The compound features a rick house for rums, gins, and whiskeys; a gift shop and sampling bar; a food trailer featuring takes on German and Mexican cuisine; a dog park; and more. Join Treaty Oak for a grand opening shindig at 16604 Fitzhugh, Dripping Springs, on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2-8pm.
Speaking of high spirits, there are still a few tickets available to the Sept. 28
Garrison Brothers dinner at
Jack Allen’s Kitchen Oak Hill. The $120 ticket gets you five courses from chef
Jack Gilmore and his team, plus pairings from mixologist
David Toby. Owner
Dan Garrison and master distiller
Donnis Todd will also be on hand. Make reservations at 512/809-3653.
Café No Sé, the poetically named “all-day neighborhood cafe” in the new South Congress Hotel, is now open. Executive chef
Michael Paley (21c Museum Hotel, Proof on Main, Garage Bar in Louisville) offers dishes like avocado toast with soft-boiled egg, crème fraîche, and aleppo pickled carrot and ricotta gnudi with grilled corn, charred sugar snap peas, and basil. 2015 James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist and
Top Chef: Just Desserts contestant
Amanda Rockman (Nico Osteria, Peninsula Hotel, Laurent Gras' L2O) has developed a playful menu of dishes like a Kir Royale paleta featuring a currant raspberry popsicle, raspberry mint salad, and prosecco pour-over (which honestly should be a requirement for every dessert).
The
AC Food team’s collective football knowledge consists of knowing that Brett Favre is not pronounced Brett Fahv-ray, but that doesn’t stop us from yelling at the TV after a few beers. And if we are going to make such a ruckus, we can think of no better way than with themed dishes from
Erica Beneke at
Max’s Wine Dive. This Sunday, the Seahawks are represented with salmon BLT sliders served with smoked apple slaw, and the Packers with fried cheese curds (duh). The Sunday night football dinners will be served 6:30-10pm throughout the fall.
