We recently had the opportunity to meet Scott Willis and his wife Lauren Pfeifle and learn about their new Tequila 512. They are an attractive, intelligent, and thoughtful couple with professional backgrounds that couldn’t be more different.
She is a PR person and presumably (based on her résumé) very good at it. Scott worked in the periphery of the music business and then at Dell and Apple.
Lauren is sitting quietly, so I casually ask her about her background in case it might provide some story interest. She tries to move the conversation back to Scott and Tequila 512, but I push a little. "Well," she sighs, “I had kind of an interesting career. I worked at the White House as the Senior Press Advance Representative, flew all over the world on Air Force One. I saw some pretty incredible sights." She tosses the last line off with such nonchalance, but then, how do you explain something that grand. It’s like Keith Richards saying, “Yeah, me and a mate wrote a few songs and toured around playing them.” Someday I want to hear some of Lauren’s story.
Working in the world of high tech, Scott was unhappy being away from music and the nightlife. He had read an article about Tito Beveridge which inspired him to get into the liquor business. We spent some time talking about how Tito had worked his butt off, maxed out every credit card he could get, and bought the cheapest land in all of Travis County for his distillery. We also discussed Tito’s looks and charm – the secret weapons the successful vodka distiller uses to maximum advantage at big public events, where he can always be found at the center of the huge crowd of women. None of this worries Scott, who is obsessed with making tequila, one with "no gimmicks, just premium quality tequila, packaged attractively and sold at a reasonable price."
This interview starts with Lauren maintaining that her handsome husband might share some of Tito’s attributes. Look for more about Tequila 512 in todays's print edition of Austin Chronicle.
