Roger Mooking and a Cooking Channel production crew spent a couple of weeks in Central Texas in the late spring, hunting, fly-fishing, and roasting a pig with Tink Pinkard. They were so impressed with Pinkard, in fact, they devoted an entire episode to his work. The show airs tonight at 7pm CDT and Tink is hosting a viewing party at the Brixton (1412 E. Sixth)
In a Man Fire Food segment called Roasting and Ranching in Texas, Pinkard's skills as an outdoor guide, hunter, fisherman, and caterer all come into play. Tink teaches Roger how to build a barbecue pit out of cinder blocks and then prepare and roast a whole pig over hot coals. They also manage to work in a fly-fishing lesson and a visit to a ranch with a herd of Texas longhorn cattle.
So, how does a Central Texas hunting guide, forager, and caterer end up on the Cooking Channel? According to Tink, the production people contacted him after reading about him in a Food Informants column on the Huffington Post. Tink was originally scheduled to be one half of a two-segment Man Fire Food episode, but they had such a grand time shooting the pig roast, Mooking and the team came back for more and made him the focus of an entire half hour show.
The other Man Fire Food segment shot in Central Texas documented the glazing of the new ceramic brick pit at the iconic Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor and paid a visit to the legendary Kreuz Market in Lockhart. Though that episode has already aired, it offers great coverage of two famous Central Texas barbecue joints and is certainly worth watching for in re-runs.
In the meantime, don't forget to catch Tink Pinkard providing Roger Mooking with an authentic Texas culinary adventure tonight. Man Fire Food airs on the Cooking Channel Tuesday, July 30 at 7pm CDT. Tink and friends will gather at the Brixton at 6:30pm.
