Valentine's Day Sweets

By Virginia B. Wood, February 13, 2013, 4:15pm, On the Range

Those of you lucky enough to have your own Sweet Baboo know that edible gifts are obligatory for Valentine's Day. It doesn't have to be Champagne, candy, or edible underwear, but you gotta have something. These local purveyors of delectable sweets will see to it that you don't go home empty-handed.

Yes, the folks at Amy's Ice Creams are busy cranking out chocolate covered strawberries as always, but this year an enticing new treat has been added to their line-up. They are making personalized miniature chocolate cakes filled with a thick layer of delicately-flavored strawberry ice cream, all under a mantle of marshmallow frosting and chocolate shavings. The $10 cakes can be customized with chocolate covered strawberries, someone's name, or perhaps two sets of initials. Order them online or at all their Austin outlets through the end of the day Feb. 14th.

For cupcake lovers, what about Hey Cupcake's (multiple outlets) Luvpak ($9.99) filled with two Red Velvet (Red Velvet cake w/cream cheese frosting); 2 LuvCake (chocolate cake w/strawberry cream cheese frosting; and 2 Vanilla Dream (yellow cake with vanilla buttercream). They'll also whip you up an assortment with six different flavors for the same price, but you can't order them from the button link on the picture, you'll have to do that here.

Nothing says love at the office like a box of heart-shaped Krispy Kreme (12586 Research; 701 E. Stassney) doughnuts and decorated rings. Look for hearts frosted in white with red and white sprinkles, a chocolate-iced heart with a red frosting drizzle, or and chocolate-iced ring with festive sprinkles.

While it's already too late to have something shipped from Royer's Round Top Cafe for Valentine's Day delivery, they are offering two delightfully decadent sweet selections in addition to the special Valentine's Dinner Menu that runs through this weekend. The enormous, heart-shaped chocolate Ding Dongs ($10) are filled with vanilla butter cream and drenched in chocolate ganache or there's a heart-shaped box of miniature chocolate chip pecan pies for only $29.95. The sweets are worth the drive to Round Top whether you can get dinner reservations or not!
