Audio Hype: Metz

Cut from the same cloth as the Jesus Lizard and Nirvana, Metz has been making noise for the past 5 years and people are starting to listen.

There is something dangerous about the sounds that Metz creates. The guitar and bass ignite fuzzy, overdriven bombs as the drums blast sonic shards of glass at their listeners. A friend noted that they emphasize discomfort with their tones. The music mimics the effect of being unpleasantly intoxicated, which is the subject of one of their songs "Wasted". Sometimes the vocals sound as if they are yelling for relief from their own song, but your ears yearn for more controlled chaos.

Simply watching Hayden Menzies pound his drum set into the ground is exhausting. He beats those things like a red headed step child. When asked about his technique he responded, "It's the only exercise I get."

It is furious, it is raw, it is exposed, at times it makes me want to revert to a primitive state and smash anything in sight with a dinosaur bone. They light a fuse at the beginning of their set and it is only a matter of time until they burst into flames. Metz is sheer, uncut energy. The good shit.

Metz will be in town for the Austin Psych Fest kick off party; they play the 9pm slot at the Mohawk on Thursday, April 25th where they will open for A Place to Bury Strangers. Their previous sets have been brief, sharp and intense, but brief, so get there on time! Let me assure you, if you witness the entire Metz set on Thursday you will be spent, the band will most likely be spent...hell, we'll all be spent.
