First Plates Extra Helpings: Small You Care to Eat

Chef Danny Palumbo cooks up some mighty tasty satire

Locally sourced, locally prepared: Charcut.

The tropes of modern culinary excess, skewered like God's own shish kebab?

We've seen such things in the past, we're looking forward to seeing more in the near future – as rendered by Kelly Hudson, Dan Klein, and Arthur Meyer in FUDS, say – but we're especially glad to see it happening right now, totally unrelated to but concurrent with the Austin Chronicle's First Plates issue.

We're talking about the new website for a fake restaurant called Abbrev's, where cutting-edge cookery seems to be a runaway case of Honey, I Shrunk The Portion Control.

Fomented and formulated by Austin's own Danny Palumbo, who previously brought us the kindercore foodie hilarity of lil' buco, the Abbrev's website is Best-of-The-Onion-level funny. No wonder Mac Blake and Joe Hafkey chose this Palumbo (along with Aaron Brooks) to take over the Jazz Cigarette stage; no wonder Palumbo's weekly "Live at Coldtowne" stand-up showcase is such a popular show.

No wonder, in fact, that –

Ah, enough chewing on this gluten-free wordsnack, reader – go get you some dessert.
