A Few Visual Art Galleries: In Your City and Beyond Right Now

By Wayne Alan Brenner, September 7, 2012, 4:46pm, Chronolog

So much going on, everywhere, all the time, it's like we're smack dab in the middle of some kind of ... existence, isn't it?

So, yeah, I'm probably not going to make it down to TSU in San Marcos this weekend, which is a sorrow, because Randall Reid has a huge solo show down there, and his object-collages are always worth seeing, to say the least. It's like, if Borges' Library of Babel had space for framed artwork on the walls between shelves? Reid's work would fit in perfectly among them. Not because they'd seem pieces excised from the library itself – that would be more the style of Lance Letscher's artwork – but because they're like the more graphic, less bibliocentric versions of just that sort of aesthetic gambit. Luckily, Reid's "Evidence of a Society" show is up through the 15th, so maybe next weekend will afford an opportunity.

And because I'm not making it to San Marcos, I'm sure as hell not making it to San Antonio, so I'll not yet be seeing the other of the two Steve Brudniak-enhanced shows improving gallery walls in Texas right now. Fortunately, there's a Brudniak solo show in Austin, too: "Back from Samsara" at ACC Gallery – which we've already crowed about right here.

And then there's also the double-gallery haymaker of Tiny Park and Slugfest to knock any visual-arts doldrums out of Austin's own squared circle.

Tiny Park is filled with works by Anthony Garza, a man who renders the natural world in pencil, with such verisimilitude, at such large scale, that you almost expect the creatures, the plants, the icebergs to break out of the paper and devastate the city with their beauty. Tonight – Friday night – is the opening reception.

Slugfest is featuring new woodcuts, equally enormous, by St. Louis' irrepressible Tom Huck – who brings us a sweet suite of prints called "Hillbilly Kama Sutra," which you might imagine occurring at some mad intersection of Lynd Ward and an Ozarks trailer park, may something divine have mercy on our eyes' titillated souls. Tomorrow night – Saturday night – is the opening reception.

So, yeah – Saint Marc, Saint Tony, I'll have to take a rain check – or a drought check, more like – and catch your urban oases of beauty a bit later; this weekend, Austin's galleries (and the usual agenda of local reportage and arts fomenting) are keeping me close to home.
