Winning the Future, Part One

By Cindy Widner, May 11, 2011, 4:58pm, Under the Covers

Thanks to some talented young writers and inspired local musicians, this Friday Austin gets a chance to enjoy its own twist on the song-poem genre.

Austin Bat Cave, the nonprofit that offers a diverse group of kid scribes free writing instruction programs year-round, recently mixed and matched lyrics resulting from a songwriting workshop at Anderson High with some local musicians, who put the words to music.

The recorded result, CD I Don't Have a Mane, features collaborations with such notables as Ghostland Observatory's Aaron Behrens ("In a Faraway Time") and Focus Group ("Dear Katy Perry"), among others. Sales of the CD will benefit the writing programs, as will a live performance of the songs by many of the bands involved, including Comanche Club and Sunset; it's at Mohawk, 912 Red River, on Friday, May 13, starting at 9:30pm, free with a $5-$10 suggested donation.
