O. Henry Museum to Host Writing Workshop

Mary Helen Specht teaches a Short Story Master Class

O. Henry Museum to Host Writing Workshop

You know the whole “if these walls could talk” thing? Well, listen up, son, ‘cause these walls probably know a thing or two about twist endings.

Local writer and Pushcart Prize nominee Mary Helen Specht will run a two-part Short Story Master Class, held at the historic O. Henry Museum on East Fifth St. Specht was a judge for our 18th annual Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest, so we can state from firsthand experience that she is a sharp and savvy reader; we have every confidence you will emerge the wiser for this experience.

Slightly poorer, yes, too: The two-part class costs $139. But here’s what bang you’ll get for your buck: The first class, which takes place Sept. 11, will include the how-to part, then would-be writers will toil on their own on a first draft of the short story. They then return with first draft completed for a second class, Sept. 25, where feedback will be provided. Students will then submit a final draft, which will be reviewed by American Rust author Philipp Meyer. Meyer will choose his favorite story to be recognized at the Texas Book Festival in October.

Space is limited; you can register by calling 512-472-1903 or emailing michael.hoinski@ci.austin.tx.us. For more info, go here.
