Whatcha Doing This Weekend, Austinite?

And we're not talking about sports or popular music or sweat lodges or whatever, but specifically about things in the, as they call it, Fine Arts sector.

(Well, and comedy. That's a fine art, right?)

OK, look:

1) Zombies and Delinquents! Even though the Out Of Bounds Comedy Festival is over for another year, awwwwwwww shit, the wild improv goes on – with (among so many other options) The Institution Theatre offering the anthrophagic horrors of RISEN (set in the AU of World War Z) and the Hideout Theatre putting the bad behavior of distaff juvies on display in Reform School for Wayward Girls – both of these shows in the middle of Saturday night.

2) It's Not The Kind Of Salsa That You Eat. What it is, is a free beginner Salsa dance lesson, followed by a professional dance performance and a chance for you to strut your own stuff, right there at the Zilker Hillside Theater, with a live Salsa band providing the sonic fuel for your fancy footwork on Saturday.

3) Face Values? Faces Devalued? Ah, Hell, How About Another Mug o' Suds? The visual-arts scene kicks back into post-summer high gear, and just three of the events we're excited by are the Davis Gallery's quintet of artists capturing the figurative in photo and collage, Denise Prince's Tractatus 7 exhibition of physical-trauma survivors recreating high-fashion Missoni ads, and of course Co-Lab's craft-beer-celebrating exhibition & swigfest called Art of the Brew.

4) The Strings Of The Heart & The Fingers. I remember reading that Andrés Segovia once dismissed the electric guitar as "a toy," and I remember thinking, "Wow, you are the preeminent maestro of the string-instrument world, but fuck you, dude." Don't know how Michael Anthony Nigro feels about the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Steve Vai and so on, but he's in town to bring the classical guitar brilliance to various gorgeous works this Sunday.

5) Actually, You Should Just Look At The Theatre Listings This Week. Because, really, there's too much good shit going on in Austin right now. Still, we'll gladly point you in the direction of that weird and crafty, beautiful and strange, poignant and pointed puppet-show-performance-for-adults-only that Glass Half Full calls The Orchid Flotilla. Yeah, it's freaky good.
