He'll have barely broken in his talk-show desk, but Seth Meyers is Austin-bound for SXSW to give an insider's peek at his take on Late Night. Fellow SNL alum Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein will do the same for indie satire Portlandia, as will Pete Holmes for his TBS show. Plus Tambor's back!
It's the first salvo in SXSW Comedy's campaign for 2014, as announced Tuesday afternoon. A full lineup of comics and parties is forthcoming in February, but the release of this quartet of panels certainly whets the appetite for more of the laughs in this year's festival schedule.
Inside Late Night With Seth Meyers
Saturday, March 8, 3:30pm (Austin Convention Center Ballroom 18ABCD)
Meyers makes his official debut as a talk-show host on Feb. 24, taking the baton from Jimmy Fallon as he jumps forward an hour into The Tonight Show. But after just two weeks under his belt, he'll be in town to discuss how the show came together with producer Mike Shoemaker and head writer Alex Baze, both grads of Saturday Night Live like Meyers. Olivia Munn will moderate.
Jeffrey Tambor's Acting Workshop
Sunday, March 9, 3:30pm (Austin Convention Center Ballroom 18ABCD)
The beloved character actor from The Larry Sanders Show and Arrested Development returns for what has become a SXSW tradition: an acting workshop in which Tambor brings a couple of aspiring actors onstage and coaches them through a scene, offering insights into acting – and life – from his brilliant career.
The Pete Holmes Show Makes it Weird
Monday, March 10, 3:30pm (Austin Convention Center Ballroom 18ABCD)
This accomplished joker-of-all-trades – stand-up comic, New Yorker cartoonist, sitcom writer, voice of the E-trade baby – used SXSW to take his pioneering podcast You Made It Weird live for the first time in 2012, but he's back this year to talk about his recent leap to basic cable in TBS' newest late-night entry, The Pete Holmes Show. With him will be the program's co-producers, Oren Brimer and Nick Bernstein, to share background on the show's blend of interviews, sketch comedy, and film.
Portlandia: Behind the Scenes with the Creators
Tuesday, March 11, 3:30pm (Austin Convention Center Ballroom 18ABCD)
IFC's signature sketch series has laid bare the absurdities of hipsterism, especially as practiced in the wilds of Oregon. Here, the show's three co-creators and co-writers – Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, who also star, and Jonathan Krisel, who also directs – discuss how Portlandia came to be and preview new material. Comic Matt Braunger moderates.
SXSW Comedy panels are part of SXSW Convergence, exploring the crossroads of the creative and digital industries, and will be open to all Interactive and Film attendees, as well as Gold and Platinum badgeholders. For more information, visit www.sxsw.com/comedy.
