A Side of Hummos to Go
By Kate X Messer, Fri., July 2, 1999

We get a little misty when we hear of nuts like 22-year-old Matthew Lawrence and his canine sidekick, Hummos (see photo), who together are biking across America in hopes of raising dough and awareness for AIDS along the way. We know that this sounds preposterous on two fronts, but, please, let us clarify: a) Hummos isn't actually biking, silly. He's riding along in one of those trailer/pup tent thingies, and b) Sure, while leaps and bounds have been made in the cocktail department to curb the nasty effects of the AIDS reality, there still needs to be AIDS awareness: The disease still exists. New cases among teens are still steady, if not on the rise. Curbing that part of the problem takes awareness. AIDSCare of Chicago will be the recipient of any cash you should wish to send along in honor of Matthew's 4,500-mile Los Angeles-to-Maine trek. Sadly, we didn't get notice of this deal until Hummos was headed south, to San Antonio. The two are camping along the way. If you have pals or know of AIDS care workers between here and Maine who might be interested in putting them up, hanging out with them, or feeding them, check out the Web site or e-mail the pedal-pushing pair directly: speedball650@hotmail.com or http://www.TransformationRotation.org or AIDSCare, For Matthew's Ride, 315 W. Barry Ave., Chicago, IL 60657, 773/935-4663 x122.
Barely Enough Time to Grow Sideburns!
Hey, peanut-butter-and-banana eaters, it's time again for Viva Las Vegas!, the annual star-studded, Elvis-encrusted, casino-style fundraiser for Project Transitions. This year's hunk of burning love event is Sat, Jul 10, 8pm-midnight at the Austin Music Hall. Tickets are on sale right now, $10 advance. They go up to $15 at the door. Behind the door, there's gonna be plenty of craps, blackjack, roulette, and a Vegas-style buffet (Tell Gerg Steeb to bring his Ziplocs™). We'll remind you again next week, but for know we figured you'd need a week or so to practice your sneer. 451-2273.
No Skirting the Issue
Austin still doesn't have a women's bar. So if your proclivities and inclinations would normally lead you to seek out the calming, comforting oasis of such a venue, fret not; you are not entirely out of luck, sister. Austin has Club Skirt, a monthly club of sorts -- a dance, really, which benefits different local public service organizations. This month's event is this weekend, Sat, Jul 3, 7pm, and as always is at Fiesta Gardens, 2101 Bergman. The beneficiaries for July are ALLGO/Informe SIDA and the American Cancer Society. clubskirtaustin@worldnet.att.net or 451-2633.

His Presentation, entitled, The Real Heroes, is sponsored by CASA of Travis County, the Austin Children's Shelter, and the UT School of Social Work. 459-CASA.
