Baywatch's Kimm Collinsworth

Yummy Baywatch hunk and hunkarino Jose Solano (Manny Gutierrez on the show of shows) and Austin native (whoa!) Kimm Collinsworth will be jostling it For the People this weekend along with the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department at the Barton Springs Pool 5K Run & Fundraiser. We non-bronzed-god types are welcome to run right alongside the red-clad ones this Sat, May 1, 8am to get folks excited at the prospect of enlisting as City Lifeguards. Who better than Babewatch stars to get those lifesaving juices flowing? Well, how about John Howard, the "World's Fastest Cyclist?" Howard and the U.S. Triathlon Series Expo, plus a Bike Rodeo are also part of the frolicky fun to be had at the benefit. Entry forms are available at RunTex on Riverside, the Barton Springs Giftshop, or the main Parks & Rec office at 200 S. Lamar. A $12 entry fee is due by this Fri, Apr 30. 472-3254.

You & Fish Need Bikes

A lucky 13 films about bicycles will be pumped up and cranked out for the general public over the next two weeks at the Bicycle Film Festival this Mon, May 3 and May 10. Ted White, the dude who documented Austin's own Critical Mass bike movement earlier this decade, has amassed quite the collection of bike-geared movies. His documentary, simply titled Critical Mass, will be previewed at the second event on the 10th. Enjoy titles such as Velorution, a doc about Havana's answer to the oil embargo; The Red Bicycle, an African bike odyssey; and Bikecology from Japan. The fest will be held at that venerable house of odd film fests, the Ritz Lounge Upstairs, 320 E. Sixth. The $3 donation will go to Austin's Yellow Bike Project. 457-9011.

Racism/Erase-ism

Yup. It's still a necessary topic in America, in 1999. It's easy to get lost in all the self-congratulatory backslapping as we look back on how far our primitive culture has come with regard to getting along with others. But damn, we all have a long way to go, baby. The YWCA of Greater Austin and the UT Center for African & African-American Studies will pull together to host a free and open-to-the-public Panel Discussion on the Elimination of Racism and solutions to erasing the hate. Profs and students from the center, as well as from the departments of anthropology, sociology, history, and journalism will toss about ideas about all this, Fri Apr 30, 3-6pm on the UT campus, UTC Building, #2.112A (21st & Speedway). A light reception will follow. 326-1222.

Refer This!

How often do you see the words "lawyer" and "free" in the same sentence? Well, strap in, schnooky, you're in for a shock. It's going to happen twice in this very blurb. A word of caution, however, to those without barristerian experience: Dealing with lawyers is not unlike dealing with drugs: That first, sweet hit may be free, but the follow-up can be addictive.

  • First up is the Law Day Legalline Telethon, Mon, May 3 live on Travis County TV, cable channel 17. Viewers may call in 5-8pm for Free advice from attorneys from the Lawyer Referral Service of the Travis Bar. 473-9194.
  • Secondly, Law Day continues Tue, May 4. The Lawyer Referral Service of the Travis Bar will refer you to an attorney specializing in your area of legal need for a Free 30-Minute Consultation. 472-8303.
