About AIDS

When a disease strikes as many people as HIV/AIDS, someone needs to be in charge of the response effort. In Central Texas, that task falls to the volunteer members of the Austin Area Comprehensive HIV Planning Council. "The mission of the HIV Planning Council is to develop and coordinate an effective and comprehensive community-wide response to HIV/AIDS, to reduce the incidence of HIV infection, and to maintain the highest possible quality of life for all persons infected with or affected by HIV disease, including those traditionally not served or underserved."

The Planning Council is a diverse body of 32 people who represent various populations infected/affected by HIV. Among the many tasks of the Council, the most prominent is the allocation of state, local, and federal funds for various HIV/AIDS services in the Austin area.

The Planning Council is seeking several new members for 1999. Interested individuals are invited to apply for a seat, particularly health care providers, substance abuse professionals, Hispanics, and African-Americans. People living with HIV/AIDS are especially encouraged to apply. For information or an application, please call 499-2615.
