Curtains, Closets, & the American Way

Yeah, yeah... the socio-political aspects are intriguing, but just give us the down-and-dirty dish.... Cracks in the Iron Closet: Travels in Gay and Lesbian Russia, is an "off-beat love story" of author and San Francisco Chronicle reporter David Tuller's "quasi-romance with a charismatic Russian lesbian." Off-beat, indeed, even for us poly-pan-gender-bender-blender types, considering the fact that Tuller himself is gay. UT's University Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, & Bisexual Concerns and Center for Post-Soviet and East European Studies present Tuller, Mon, Feb 3, 3:30-5pm, in the Texas Union Governor's Room. The free presentation promises to probe issues addressed in the book, like: How does culture influence sexual identity? What are the limits of American role models of gay and lesbian identity? Is bisexuality a "closeted pose" or a genuine orientation? and did y'all fit into the same size pumps?

Calling All Lesbians!

Indeed. It's the Texas Lesbian Conference annual call-up. The conference alternates locations between Dallas, Austin, and this year's site, Houston, and will be held Fri-Sun, May 16-18. Organizers are soliciting Workshop Proposals, postmarked no later than Tue, Feb 25. Call for proper forms and protocol, y'all. 713/867-3934.

Fly the Friendly Guys

Remember that stupid joke based on those Seventies airline ads featuring sexy stewardesses cooing come-ons, like, "My name's Cindy! Fly me to Dallas! My name's Helen! Fly me to Durban!" and the punchline would be either, "My name is José! Fly me to Havana!" or worse, "My name's Brad! Fly me to Than Franthithco!!"? Ha freakin' ha. Well, those have nothing to do with this. But our brand spankin' fancy gay & lesbian community center Cornerstone is kicking off their 1997 Travel Parties Series with a dinner at Jean-Luc's Bistro, Sun, Feb 9, 6:30pm. And, gee, guess which exotic travel destination will be featured at the popular bistro? Oui, oui!! France! The party includes admission to all following parties in this year's series, the kick-off dinner, including drinks, and entry in drawings for cool travel goodies like airline tix, Eurail Passes, guide books, and more. 708-1515.

First, You Sow the Seed...

...then nature grows the seed, then you reap the seed... No! No! Wait a minute... Well, we're confident that the fine planters of goodwill, the Sembradores de Amistad, have green thumbs from sowing seeds of cross-cultural cooperation for over 50 years, with chapters in Mexico and the United States. Their Valentine Gala formal dinner and dance is Sat, Feb 8, 6pm-1am, at the Hyatt Regency, to raise funds for scholarship endowments that the organization awards in its name. 928-9518.

Heart of My Art

Big shots and little kahunas of the arts and political realms will provide the heart(s), if you provide the love. La Peña presents Toma Mi Corazón, a silent auction of "heart art" created by local celebs and normal folks like: Tish Hinojosa, Sarah Bird, Ann Richards, Dagoberto Gilb, Hector Galán, and schoolkids from Travis High and Zavala and Sanchez Elementary Schools. The event features food, cash bar, and music by Los Romanceros, Sat, Feb 8, at Miguel la Bodega, with a preview party 4-6pm and the silent auction 6-8:30pm. 477-6007.

¡Solidaridad!

The situation in Chiapas worsens as the Mexican government apparently prepares for heightened conflict. Our local Comite de Solidaridad con Chiapas y Mexico has scheduled many events for the upcoming months to raise awareness and gather support. The committee is organizing a March on the Mexican Consulate, at Sixth & Brazos, Fri, Jan 31 and Wed, Feb 5, noon. There will also be a Benefit Concert at the Dougherty Arts Center, Fri-Sat, Feb 7-8, 7:30pm featuring Mexican rock artist Francisco Barrios. evera@igc.apc.org or 454-8097.
