Last year’s Texas Rollergirls championship bout was one for the ages. The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers had the reputation as the nicest team on the track, but for years that hadn’t translated into championship gold – until 2013, when they took down the seemingly unstoppable Hotrod Honeys in a nerve-wracking 204-199 victory. That meant the Honeys continued their three-year streak in the silver medal slot, and they’ll still be fuming about that loss this weekend when they get their traditional season-opening rematch. In the evening’s first bout, the resurgent Hustlers take on last year’s third place team the Hell Marys. Their bronze medal battle last time was as tense as the title fight, with the Hustlers finally finding the spark that had gone out after their 2011 championship. Will their innovative tactics and good spirits win out against the smart team play that has become the Hells’ trademark? Sat., Feb. 22, 5:15pm (2014). $15 ($12, advance; $5, kids).
