Hot on the wheels of their comeback, Monte Warden and the intrepid Wagoneers steer classic Western-style country into the confines of the Continental for a tune-up and shakedown. Recent reissue Essential Wagoneers reminded everyone south of Nashville, Tenn., why this short-lived band from late 1980s Austin packed such a wallop, just as Western Ballad makes us love Shannon McNally all over again. The Mississippi singer-songwriter’s finely woven compositions cover her Southern upbringing with wit and grace. – Margaret Moser
