Once a band establishes a working sound, it can be a precarious move to suddenly scrap it and rebuild. Wye Oak are risk-takers. 2011’s lauded Civilian seemed to solidify the folk-rock ways of Baltimore’s Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, but the pair felt confined by guitar-centered songwriting and swapped their six-strings for synthesizers on April’s virtually guitarless fourth album, Shriek. Happily, the duo’s now synth-sodden tunes remain rooted in Wasner’s earnest vocals, which survived the stylistic overhaul unscathed. – Neph Basedow
