Elephant Room

315 Congress, 512/473-2279

Native Houstinite Helen Sung received her master’s in classical piano here at UT, but don’t let that scare you. On her Concord Jazz debut and sixth LP overall, next week’s Anthem for a New Day, the pianist and her smart sextet bop tight, playful, and Latin. Saxophonist Seamus Blake and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen weave brass quick and rich, while the bandleader calls tunes from Monk, Duke, and Chick (Corea). Sung’s own “Brother Thelonious” even themes a Belgian ale. – Raoul Hernandez
