“The future of jazz” is how they often refer to Houston-born pianist Jason Moran. Winner of a coveted McArthur “Genius” Fellowship and considered to be among “the most provocative thinkers in modern jazz,” by Rolling Stone, he’s as likely inspired by J Dilla as Thelonious Monk. Last year, Moran won the DownBeat Critics Poll Triple Crown with Jazz Artist of the Year, Pianist of the Year, and Jazz Album of the Year for Ten, which celebrates the decade anniversary of his fabulous trio, the Bandwagon, with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. – Jay Trachtenberg
