Fun Fun Fun Fest’s third annual Aqua Olympics uncorks an early evening hoedown on the shores of Lady Bird Lake, offering paddleboard jousting, potato-sack races, BMX riders, water competitions, and a tug-o-war that pits City Council members against the Austin Facial Hair Club. FFF organizers Transmission Events will also announce the comedians and extreme sportsmen onboard for November’s music fest. Emceed by local funnymen Doug Mellard and Chris Cubas, and Mike Wiebe of local punks the Riverboat Gamblers, the fun fun fun starts at 4pm. Free.– Chase Hoffberger
Skeleton-hand campiness plagues most acts falling under the horror-punk umbrella, but this local triple bill demonstrates you can achieve spookiness without being cheesy. The illusive Hex Dispensers, led by smart songwriter and raw guitar handler Alex Cuervo, bring to mind the Ramones, classic sci-fi, and what a punk band would sound like if directed by Tim Burton. Vicious dark wave trio Crooked Bangs, moaning murder in French, and cosmic punk chicks the Suspirians also exorcise demons.– Kevin Curtin
Will Johnson keeps great company. In the same spirit of Monsters of Folk and New Multitudes, the Centro-matic frontman’s latest project pairs him with Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan and the Kadane Brothers of Bedhead fame. The band’s debut dishes a torrid affair of slo-core longing and cryptic heartbreak for one of only nine U.S. tour dates. West Texas atmospherics Monahans and Chase Weinacht of local pop princes Marmalakes open.– Austin Powell
