“From the great city of Austin, Texas,” sure sounded sweet coming from David Letterman as he introduced local songwriting rogue Bill Carter last Thursday on The Late Show. Performing “Anything Made of Paper,” from both the West of Memphis soundtrack and his new disc Unknown, Carter hosted on slide guitar his friend Johnny Depp, who not coincidentally sat at the right hand of Letterman. Recall Carter, Depp, and the Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes in onetime Austin Music Awards supergroup P, and note that this pen-for-hire (SRV, Waylon Jennings) boasts an upcoming AMA set.
