Chicago post-rock alums the Sea and Cake strike a fair bargain between meticulous detail and free-range atmospherics on their latest, Runner. The adroit quartet’s low-key mélange of prog, folk, and electronic music brims with subtle charms worth getting off the couch for. Fiery Furnaces songwriter/composer Matthew Friedberger’s solo work is a stranger cup of tea. The 45-track Matricidal Sons of Bitches is his 12th album in six years. It unfolds like a random collage of film score clips in a manner both intriguing and disorienting. – Greg Beets
