Super Krime: The World of Pulp Super Villains: Flash Gordon

A soundtrack by Queen is one of the highlights of this film actualization of the comic strip. The crazy set design and costumes are also dead-on replicas of the strip. Rebecca Havemeyer hosts.

  • Out of Bounds Comedy Festival

Look, it's not all about the improv, OK? That is to say, yes, it's hella about improv, the whole looooong weekend is lousy with improv – with amazing troupes from all over the country attending and performing – but there's also a sweet array of sketch comedy and stand-up comedy and just the naturally occurring comedy that ensues as hundreds and hundreds of professionals and fans converge on the ATX for the seven days of this 15th annual festival of staged (and frequently brilliant) shenanigans. Note: The epicenter of this event is The Hideout, but it's also happening in venues all over the city, and if there was ever a good time to get one of those all-fest passes? Right now, we recommend, is that time. See our top picks here, and the OOB website for details. (Also, since you're already interested in this, word to the wise: Check the righteous truths comic Katie Stone has about the scene in general.) Through Sept. 5

Wed., Aug. 31, 7:30pm, $8-10

  • Butridge Gallery: Sum You Some Me

The husband-and-wife team of Felice House and Dana Younger present their first art collaboration in Austin, an exhibition featuring six-foot-wide paintings and super-sized sculptures of body parts. We know what wonders these two can create separately; we're excited to witness what they've done together. Reception: Wed., Aug. 17, 6-8pm.
