The Girl Can't Help it

Directed by Frank Tashlin. Starring Julie London, Tom Ewell, Jayne Mansfield, Edmond O’Brien. (1956, NR, 99 min.)

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Tue., May 28, 2002

Tashlin demonstrated an innate knowledge of the capacities offered by the CinemaScope canvas, no doubt the result of his earlier years as an animator at several of the top Hollywood studios. In The Girl Can't Help It the human cartoon Jayne Mansfield, whose exaggerated body is already a widescreen gag. The film also offers great rock & roll screen performances by Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, and Gene Vincent. BeBop a Lula, indeed.
