The Hustler
1961, NR, 135 min. Directed by Robert Rossen. Starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott.
REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., Aug. 30, 2000
This pool-hall gem features Paul Newman as a young pool hustler who challenges the legendary Minnesota Fats (brilliantly played by Jackie Gleason). Dingy atmosphere and great performances make this a standout. Eugene Shuftan’s cinematography won an Oscar.
