All the King’s Men

NR, 109 min. Directed by Robert Rossen. Starring Broderick Crawford, Joanne Dru, John Ireland, Mercedes McCambridge, John Derek.

REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Tue., Aug. 22, 2000

This political allegory adapted from Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is an on-target portrait of a backwoods populist (reminiscent of Huey Long) who becomes the electorate’s messiah. Broderick Crawford’s career-high performance won him an Oscar; Mercedes McCambridge won one for Best Supporting Actress. The film also won a Best Picture Oscar.
